When the Portland Public Schools (PPS) teachers’ strike brought unexpected silence to classrooms, Rock Dojo ensured that the sound of music continued to resonate in the homes of our after school students with online guitar lessons. Not only did our young guitarists maintain their practice schedules, but they also embraced new challenges and achievements.
Embracing Online Guitar Lessons During the Strike
Transitioning to online lessons, Rock Dojo students took full advantage of the situation to refine their skills. Without missing a class, they explored the intricacies of rhythmic notation on guitar tabs, a foundational skill that enables musicians to sync with the heartbeat of any song.
Musical Milestones Achieved
We designed the Rock Dojo curriculum to keep students engaged and progressing, much like earning belts in martial arts. Students learned the E and G major scales during the strike, opening doors to a vast music repertoire. In addition, students dove into rhythmic notation on guitar tabs, an essential skill that teaches them to play in time, interpret tabs, and enhance their musical expression and phrasing.
Online Guitar Lessons: From Classic Melodies to Rock Anthems
We showcased the guitar’s versatility as students learned “Row, Row, Your Boat” and “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.” But Rock Dojo isn’t just about classical tunes; we turned up the volume by teaching students how to play metal versions of these familiar melodies, adding an exciting twist to their musical journey.

Looking Ahead
With the strike over, we’re thrilled to return to in-person classes. Our after-school program continues as scheduled, culminating the week of December 11, with a final 2023 class on December 15 at Richmond Elementary School.
