Three Great Groove Guitarists: Playing in the Pocket

Guitar Lessons for Kids

The Pocket

The pocket is the rhythmic glue that binds a band or a song together. Playing in the pocket happens when a musician finds his/her space in the music while simultaneously leaving space for the other bandmates to occupy.

How to Play in the Pocket

While the ability to play in the pocket is the hallmark of a great guitarist, even beginner guitar players can get outstanding results by practicing basic rhythms (like whole notes, half notes, quarter notes, and 8th notes) with a metronome, playing with backing tracks, and listening to great rhythm guitarists. To help you get in the pocket, legendary fusion guitarist Mike Stern suggests listening to the following groove legends.

1- West Montgomery

2- Jimi Hendrix
